Music school fix complete

Real Estate Weekly, July 21, 2004

The Brooklyn Academy of Music is nearing completion on a major restoration of its historic building exterior.

The project that began in March 2002 will be unveiled at an event in October, 2004.

Designed and overseen by the architectural firm of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, with preservation consultant Building Conservation Associates, this complex undertaking has already been awarded the 2003 New York Construction prize for restoration.

The project's construction team comprised Macro Consultants, Greyhawk North America LLC, Robert Silman & Associates, Graciano Corporation, Boston Valley Terra Cotta, David Kucera, Inc., Gil Studios, Restoration Management Services, and Miraclean Systems.

The BAM building is owned by the City of New York and the restoration was funded through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with support from the New York City Council and the Brooklyn Borough President. Additional funding also has been provided by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

"The restoration of BAM's facade marks an exciting moment in the cultural renaissance of downtown Brooklyn," said Commissioner Kate D. Levin. "The City is proud of its commitment to preserving these historical structures throughout the five boroughs."

BAM's 1908 building at 30 Lafayette Avenue was designed by Herts and Tallant--premier theater architects of the period.
