York Hunter named construction manager for Randall Island

Real Estate Weekly, July 25, 2001

York Hunter Capitol Construction is managing the construction of a $22.8 million phased renovation of Randall's Island in Manhattan. The 64-year-old, 21,000-seat Downing Stadium will be demolished and, in its place, a new 5,000-seat Track and Field Center, with an additional 5,000 temporary bleachers, will be constructed. The Track Center will replace Downing Stadium as the top outdoor track facility in the New York metropolitan area. In addition to the complex, three new soccer fields will be built.

Construction of the new Track and Field Center will conform to the International Amateur Athletic Federation's (IAAF) specifications to enable the Center's use in Continental, Regional and Area Championships. The track will also be used for Olympic track and field trials, all international invitations and matches between IAAF members and for Group Games. The design/build construction management project is slated for completion in June 2002.

"We are excited to be chosen by The New York City Economic Development Foundation to take part in the revitalization of Randall's Island, a project which will directly benefit the community," said Craig Belesi, executive five vice president and COO with York Hunter Capitol Construction. "Our ability to work on an aggressive time table, in this case, just a little more than one year, will ensure that the project is completed in time to be considered as a potential venue for the 2012 Olympics."

The facility will encompass a 400-meter, eight-lane standard track, water jump for steeplechase, plus areas for high jump, pole vault, discus and hammer throw, javelin throw and shot put. In addition to the multiple lighted soccer fields and other bail fields, York Hunter will also construct an ancillary building to house offices, meeting and locker rooms and media and spectator facilities.
