AIA recognizes architects' school design

Real Estate Weekly, Oct 6, 2004

The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter recognized Fox & Fowle's Perth Amboy High School design by awarding the firm a Merit Award under the project awards category during the 2004 Design Awards Symposium which was held on September 20th at the Center for Architecture in Manhattan.

Fox & Fowle's proposed design for the new Perth Amboy High School competition aims to bring a cultural center and encourages diversity in an industrial city, while providing a stage for secondary education.

Fox & Fowle's solution maximizes the identity of each of the school's five academies by creating a community of individual permeable units, dispersed across the location.

The students can witness activities around the campus which promotes self-awareness and overall consciousness of the school community.

Sustainable design is also introduced to the plan as an environmental teaching tool.

Green roofs, the management of storm runoff, operable windows, structural insulated panels, and ample natural lighting are just some of the sustainable elements that are included.

The Perth Amboy High School project was led by Fox & Fowle principal Sudhir Jambhekar, AIA.

Since joining the firm in 2000, he has been responsible for program intensive projects of varying scope and size. Some of his other major projects include the design of Manhattan's new Second Avenue Subway Line, the Communications and Multimedia Centers at Lehman College, and the new LCOR office building in Jamaica, Queens.

Sponsored by the AIA Design Awards Committee, The Project Awards recognize theoretical and conceptual work including temporary installations, land art, original research, urban design and a vast array of un-built projects either commissioned or self generated.

The jurors for the project awards category were Peter Papademitriou, Karen van Lengen and Pascal Quintard-Hofstein.

This year's design awards submissions fell into three categories: Architecture, Interior Architecture, and (Unbuilt) Projects.

Other distinguished jurors and panelists included: Merrill Elam, Terry Shook, Rick Joy, Patricia Conway, Jeremy King, Riccardo Roselli and Brigitte Shim.
