GSA awards major design contract in LI

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced that it has awarded the design contract for the planned Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Islip, New York, to the Spector Group in Association with Richard Meier & Partners.

Phase I of the project will include 21 new courtrooms to accommodate the current needs of the U.S. Courts of the Eastern District of New York, as well as space for multiple executive branch agencies including the FBI, DEA, IRS, OSHA and others. Long range plans call for court occupancy of the entire building, with a total of 345 cars and on grade parking for 1,100. The site is 24.7 acres adjacent to existing county court facilities in Islip, New York.

Design and construction documents are expected to be completed in the summer of 1994. Construction of the $195 million project is expected to begin early in 1995 with completion estimated for spring, 1998.

Since Phase II will require the conversion of office space to courtrooms, critical design considerations must be implemented immediately to allow this future flexibility. Proper ceiling heights, adjacencies and multiple secure circulation patterns will be planned at the onset to insure security areas. This state-of-the-art complex will set a precedent for future federal courthouse facilities.
