New directions at NYU real estate institute

Real Estate Weekly, August 17, 1994 by Arthur Zabarkes

We are pleased to announce the reorganization of the Real Estate Institute into two divisions: professional real estate programs directed by Arlyne Lesser and credit programs directed by Dr. Carl Lebowitz. Both directors have extensive, successful careers at NYU and are dedicated to continuing the high quality and depth of courses offered at The Institute.

As the 1994-95 academic year commences, the Institute, which is the largest and most specialized professional real estate training facility in the United States, is embarking upon new directions with the addition of several exciting programs, grams, courses, and prominent faculty.

Among these new offerings is the Advanced Professional Certificate in Real Estate. This program addresses the needs of professionals starting careers in real estate who find that they lack an educational base consistent with the demands of the jobs. Many are trained in one task or discipline but lack the broader context in which their work takes place. Addressing these needs, the Advanced Professional Certificate in Real Estate serves those who have earned a bachelor's degree and wish to obtain a foundation for a career in real estate, as well as those who hold graduate degrees but seek education in a new career area or a new specialization within the real estate field. The 16-credit curriculum can be completed in two semesters of evening classes or at a slower pace over a two year period. Of particular note is that credit in this program can be applied toward matriculation in the Master of Science in Real Estate.

Within the Master of Science in Real Estate program, the Real Estate Institute's highly successful comprehensive professional curriculum, a new specialized Finance Concentration is now being planned, including an advanced seminar in Real Estate Finance.

Continuing its tradition of leadership, the Real Estate Institute announces a new Certificate in Health Care Design, one of the first in the nation. Increased spending on medical and health care facilities and the renovation and adaptive reuse of current facilities create opportunities for real estate practitioners, facility management executives, architects, designers, building construction and engineering professionals. Taught by leading experts in the field, the program features such courses as "Hospital Design and Capital Financing Issues," "Health Care Facility Management," and "New Facilities for Older Adult Living. "

Annual conferences continue to play a major role in the Real Estate Institute's comprehensive approach to the Real Estate Industry. Once again the Institute is sponsoring national conferences on Taxation in Real Estate, Pension Fund Investment in Real Estate, and Real Estate capital as well as its premier industry conference, the 17th International Hospitality Industry Conference. The Institute, is particularly pleased to announce that Jonathan M. Tisch, President and Chief Executive Officer of Loews Hotels, will chair the June 1995 conference. A civic leader and philanthropist whose Professionalism is widely acclaimed throughout the hospitality and entertainment industries, Mr. Tisch brings to the conference a wide expertise related to significant issues affecting the entire scope of the hospitality industry.

As part of the Institute expanding program and in response to the trends occurring within the real estate industry, new courses have been introduced throughout the spectrum of the Institute. Among them are "Brokering and Leasing Retail Space" and a new breakfast series of lectures, "New York Real Estate Today," the latter featuring presentations by prominent New York real estate practitioners. The course will qualify for fifteen hours of Continuing Education (NYCEM) credit.

Additionally, Larry Silverstein will again moderate his Silverstein Workshop, known throughout the industry for its ongoing, exciting presentation of Investment and Development Projects and Deals." Bringing together leading high profile investors, developers and users, the lecturers provide participants with case studies in ongoing development and investment.

The Salesperson's and Broker's Licensing program continues to provide students with professional educational requirements that meet New York State license requirements. Similarly, the Appraisal Licensing and Certification program meets professional education requirements for New York State Licensed, Certified Residential and Certified General appraisers. In addition, courses are offered which provide continuing education for real estate appraisers, including a new case study in "Advanced Valuation Applications" and a course in. "Hotel Evaluation."

As a major center for Real Estate Management, the Institute offers BOMI (Building Owners and Managers Institute) courses for those interested in the RPA or FMA designations; ABO (Associated Builders and Owners of Greater New York) courses for those interested in the RAM and Senior Ram designations; and NYARM (New York Association of Real Estate Managers) courses for those interested in the NYARM designation. Additionally, the Institute offers facility management courses designed to prepare, students for IFMA (International Facility Management Association) certification. The Institute also provides courses that can be offered toward the Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB) designation offered by the Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA) and courses leading to the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation.
