New hospital breaks ground on $900M renovation plan
Real Estate Weekly, July 21, 1993
A groundbreaking ceremony held recently marked the start of construction at New York Hospital for a $900 million expansion and renovation program. Lehrer McGovern Bovis (LMB) is serving as construction manager for the project.
The New York Hospital project involves approximately one million square feet of new construction. A new 776-bed, 12 story full-service hospital facility is being built over- a platform that spans the FDR Drive from 68th to 70th Streets. The building will be integrated into the hospital campus with architecture that is similar to the existing 1930's gothic style.
Renovation work already underway by LMB includes reconfiguring of the front entrance to allow for access to the construction platform and to improve circulation. In addition, renovations are being completed on the MRI facility and the kitchen facilities, and the old electrical distribution system is being replaced with new high-tension service.
The architects for the project are Hellmuth Obata Kassabaum and Taylor Clark Associates. Thornton-Tomasetti is the structural engineer and Syska & Hennessy the mechanical/electrical engineer. Completion of the new construction is scheduled for 1997.
