First Pace warehouse opens in Westchester

Real Estate Weekly, August 11, 1993

The grand opening of the 110,000-square-foot PACE Membership Warehouse at 333 Saw Mill River Road (Route 9A) in Elmsford, New York, was held last month. The Robert Martin Company, developers and owners of the 13-acre PACE site, introduced the first warehouse club in Westchester County, and has brought to the area the benefits of this new trend in retailing.

Martin S. Berger, Robert Martin president, stated that the new development has created hundreds of jobs for the community, and will generate additional retail activity for many local businesses in the area. Berger noted that prior to PACE's entry into Westchester, the County's residents traveled to New Jersey or Connecticut warehouse clubs in order to take advantage of wholesale shopping.

PACE sells a variety of name-brand household merchandise and food products at wholesale prices to its members. The company offers two different categories of membership, designed to meet the needs of businesses and the individual consumer,

With the opening of its Elmsford location, PACE now operates 109 membership warehouses in 25 states and Puerto Rico. The company is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, and is a wholly - owned subsidiary of Kmart Corporation. Kmart stock is listed, under the trading symbol KM, on the New York, Midwest and Pacific stock exchanges.

In selecting the Westchester location, PACE was represented by Pamela Bren of Goldschmidt & Associates and Jeffery Rodman of Kit & Associates. Bren said that the retailer's site selection criteria was matched by the demographics and location of the Elmsford site.

In addition to their involvement with the PACE transaction, Space Specialists and Goldschmidt & Associates have established an informal association and are working together on other sites for major retail developments in the New York metropolitan area.
