(1.) Per capita personal income was computed using Census Bureau
midyear population estimates.
(2.) Percent change calculated from unrounded data.
(3.) The personal income level shown for the United States is derived
as the sum of the county estimates. It differs from the estimate of
personal income in the national income and product accounts (NIPAs)
because of differences in cover", in the methodologies used to prepare
the estimates, and in the timing of the availability of source data. In
particular, it differs from the NIPA estimate because, by definition,
it omits the earnings of Federal civilian and military personnel
stationed abroad and of U.S. residents employed abroad temporarily by
private U.S. firms.
(4.) The metropolitan area definitions used by BEA for its personal
income estimates are the new county-based definitions issued by the
Office of Management and Budget in June 2003 (with revisions released
February 2004) for federal statistical purposes.

Income: Preliminary Estimates for 2002 and Revised Estimates for
1969-2001" in the June 2004 issue of the SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS.
