Clean off the fireplace mantle and make room for those holiday cards. If trends hold, Americans will send out more than 4.5 billion stamped cards and letters this holiday season, plus an additional 138 million parcels, comprising 28% of the annual mail volume, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Their holiday season begins when the Thanksgiving turkey is barely a sandwich and doesn't end until we sing "Auld Lang Syne." This season, Americans are expected to buy more than 2.6 billion Christmas cards (averaging about 38 cards per sender) and another 48 million cards celebrating Thanksgiving, Chanukah, and New Year's. Who's doing most of the licking and sticking? Annually, middle-aged women buy more than 80 percent of all greeting cards, at an average cost of $2.00.
