Generating response from unsolicited e-mails (a.k.a. spam) is a tougher job than ever. According to the 10th annual WWW User Survey conducted by Georgia Tech's Graphics, Visualization & Usability Center, 91 percent of e-mail users currently receive spam and 64 percent delete such messages without ever opening them up.
In 1996, when a mere 79 percent of e-mailers reported receiving junk mail, only 46 percent sent the stuff straight to the trash. As spam seems to be closing in on us like the plague, e-mail users have all but conceded defeat. Only 12 percent even bother requesting that their names be removed from lists - 4 percentage points less than in 1996.
