Switching jobs? You're not alone. The average person in the United States holds 9.2 jobs between the ages of 18 and 34, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This finding comes from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, a survey of nearly 10,000 men and women that spans nearly two decades and provides information on work, training, schooling, income, health conditions, and other characteristics.

The latest release focuses on the number of jobs held, labor force participation, earnings growth, and promotions. Promotion rates, the survey shows, are similar among men and women with high school diplomas, but among college graduates, men are more likely than women to get tapped for a senior position (36 percent versus 24 percent).
