By 2050, more than 20 percent of the U.S. population will be over the age of 65, compared with less than 13 percent in 2000, and by mid-century about one-third of the elderly population will be of a race or ethnicity other than white. To fully understand the growing needs of this shifting demographic segment, The Administration on Aging, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, offers on its Web site, current, historical and projected population data on America's rapidly aging population, plus links to related research and articles. Click on the "Professionals" tab and scroll down to "Statistics About Older People" to find the latest demographic statistics from the Census Bureau and other entities, including information on grandparents and older Americans with disabilities.
