China's President matters

Chief Executive, The, March, 2006 by Robert Kuhn

A terrific report on the CEO Leadership Summit (January/February 2006), at once substantive, insightful, prescriptive, energetic. The China article ("Relationships on the Ground are Key to Winning China Strategies") is spot on, giving a real-world perspective that I've not seen presented as cogently.

[Unfortunately] one of my quotes inadvertently mischaracterizes my views. Meeting President Hu Jintao surely means a great deal and is indeed an honor in China. My point is that to do real business in China one must go beyond formal meetings with senior leaders, which are often necessary but never sufficient, and develop deep working relationships with officials and executives directly responsible, which for most businesses operate at provincial and municipal levels.
