IIA announces elections and awards - Update - Institute of Internal Auditors - Brief Article

LEROY E. BOOKAL, retired general auditor, Texaco, Inc., was elected chairman of the board at The IIA's 61st International Conference in Washington, D.C. Other elected officers include Robert N. McDonald, senior vice chairman; Dennis K. Beran, vice chairman of professional development; Anton B. van Wyk, vice chairman of professional practices; Betty L. McPhilimy, vice chairman of professional services; Larry E. Rittenberg, vice chairman of research; Janet E. Andersen, international treasurer; and Gerald D. Cox, international secretary.
In addition to electing officers, The IIA presented awards for volunteer service and achievement. The Victor Z. Brink Award, which recognizes individuals who have given unusual our outstanding service to the internal audit profession through participation in IIA activities, was presented to former IIA Chairman Howard J. Johnson and former Executive Committee member Giovanni Grossi. Former Chairman Anthony J. Ridley received the Bradford Cadmus Award, which honors outstanding contributions in research, education, publications, or other developments and activities in internal auditing.
The IIA also named Dr. Flemming Ruud, from the University of St. Gallen, the Leon R. Radde Educator of the Year for his notable contributions in internal audit education.
The Lawrence B. Sawyer Certification awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in the development of The IIA's Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) program, were presented to Procter & Gamble Co., Canada Post Corp., and the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans, as well as The IIA's Madison and Karachi chapters and IIA-Chinese Taiwan.
For outstanding performance on the CIA exam, William S. Smith gold medal awards were given to Juergen Rohrmann and Li Yanhua.
The IIA also presented awards recognizing outstanding submissions to Internal Auditor Dennis B. Applegate received the John B. Thurston Award for Literary Excellence for his article, "Controlling Joint Venture Risk," published in the June 2001 issue.
The Ted Keys Roundtable Award, which recognizes the top-rated story in the magazine's "Roundtable" column, was presented to The IIA's Phoenix chapter for "A Hard Look at Soft Controls" (August 2001).
