Communication World, Dec, 2001

This issue's theme has been advertised as being devoted to "Back to Basics,"--a place that we probably should visit occasionally. Especially as we adjust to so many changes in the world around us. After the Sept. 11 tragedy, many Americans truly did go back to the familiar, the traditional, to re-establish their roots, and to learn from the past how to approach the future. We saw a resurgence of patriotism, with flags displayed proudly and prominently. "Comfort" food was in; diets were out. Holidays were celebrated with more enthusiasm and appreciation. We gathered our families and friends both to mourn and to celebrate. Much of what we had taken for granted for so long now is going through a renewal process as we gain a new appreciation of experiences from past generations. This tragedy affected the whole world, not just the U.S., thus providing an opportunity to learn from other cultures and traditions how to face current worldwide crises.

It's also a good time to use ABC's worldwide network to help all of us get through what may be turbulent times ahead. What better way to share your knowledge and experience than through contributing articles to CW and to participate in IABC's local and international programming?

As mentioned in an earlier column, one of my goals for the year is to truly internationalize Communication World. To do this, we're going to need your help. We're discussing several ways to make this internationalism happen, and as plans develop, don't be surprised to get a call or e-mail asking for your services! We're all in this together, and your contributions and suggestions will be truly appreciated.
