A look in

Communication World, Oct-Nov, 2002 by Natasha Spring

Stepping into Gloria Gordon's shoes after her 18 years of devoted service as editor of Communication World--there's a daunting prospect! Fortunately, I had the honor of learning a great deal from Gloria through the years, and I am delighted to take on the role of executive editor. I also have a terrific collaborator in senior editor Naomi Mandelstein, whose publishing and editing experience includes previous work in Europe and more recently with IABC. Naomi and our managing editor, Virginia Sowers, from Douglas Murphy Communications Inc., are vital contributors to our editorial team.

In my 10 years with IABC and the IABC Research Foundation, I've had the opportunity to work on projects that offer communication professionals excellent content and solid learning opportunities. Our goal for Communication World is to present stimulating content that will expand your mind, add to your knowledge of communication principles, benefit your organization and move you forward in your career.

We also place high priority on continuing to add global perspective to the magazine. We have recruited a new team of regional editors from around the world who will work on writing and procuring articles. And soon we will be tapping into a dynamic new editorial board of respected communication professionals. In time, we expect to develop a magazine that is richly representative of our internationally diverse membership and our shared professional goals.

In this issue, electronic communication and marketing expert John Heineman alerts communication professionals to critical legal issues that can arise with e-mail communication campaigns. Ron Penoyer with Fleishman--Hillard reports recent survey findings that spotlight the increasing need for competitive intelligence in public relations. This issue also explores the crisis communication lessons learned from Sept. 11, with articles from veteran communicator Gina Connell, ABC, and John Deveney, ABC, a highly regarded communication strategist.

The new Communication World team looks forward to providing you with consistently valuable content. We hope our first issue serves you well.
