Tracing the circuitous route of publication design - International Association of Business Communicators: 1970 - 1990: Section 1: Vision to reality

Communication World, May-June, 1990 by Roy Paul Nelson

Some new designers need to face up to editorial restrictions. The late Charles Eames, who designed the much imitated Eames lounge chair and ottoman which look as contemporary today as when they were introduced in 1955, is quoted in The Conrad Directory of Design (Stephen Bayley, editor) as saying that Affluence offers the kind of freedom I am deeply suspicious of.

It offers freedom from restraint, and virtually it is impossible to do something without restraints ... when somebody is on the ball he eliminates choices and establishes limits for himself ... We have to rediscover limitations."
