The heart of the matter - Front Page - Brief Article

Training & Development, Feb, 2002

Like most people everywhere, we continue to react and respond to a changed world and a changed workplace.

In particular, our cover story by Shari Caudron tells how technology is soaring as a solution to the economic downturn and trepidation about travel, and Tracy Mauro's article shows how building a sense of community in organizations can help employees refocus and recommit around shared values.

This issue of T D also introduces a new quarterly column, Speaking of Ethics, edited by Tim Hatcher. It will address real-world ethical dilemmas in the workplace, and practitioners will describe ways to handle them. And there's T D associate editor Eva Kaplan-Leiserson's article on tuning in to your heart rhythms to enhance work performance and reduce stress.

We seem to be going back to basics, to the heart of what matters: doing the right thing, coming together, getting in touch with our true values, priorities, thoughts, and feelings. Not a bad direction to go in and perhaps a permanent one. A recent poll said that most Americans think the changes in attitudes and behavior since 9.11 have been positive. For the future and globally, the lasting effect remains to be seen.

Not a bad theme for February, the heart month. Listen to it, follow it.
