Assessing Performance: 1 to 2 hours, US$149. Publisher: Harvard Business School Publishing

Harvard Business School Publishing's course is complemented by a keynote article, "Performance Appraisal Is Dead: Long Live Performance Management." It's a thought-provoking indictment of past appraisal procedures and a ringing endorsement for the ascendance of performance management. Beyond HBSP's internal debate between performance-based appraisals and performance management, we found a competent survey of the appraisal process. This course narrowly, but completely, lists the steps and considerations in preparing for, conducting, and offering feedback on an appraisal interview. The course also discusses the benefits of encouraging career development activities.

Assessing Performance: This course offers good content at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately, the text-based format doesn't take advantage of the Web medium.
