"We are proud to support Representative Bacon and the state of Ohio in their efforts to keep alcohol out of the hands of those under the legal drinking and we encourage the Senate to pass this important legislation," said Ken Lane, Vice President, Government and Trade Relations, Diageo North America. "Diageo wants to reiterate our zero tolerance policy when it comes to underage drinking and we are proud to be proactively working with lawmakers across the country to address this serious issue."
An industry leader in its commitment to promoting responsible drinking, Diageo has led the passage of similar legislation in other states to fight underage drinking by suspending the driver's license of adults who knowingly furnish alcohol to anyone younger than age 21. To date, similar bills have been introduced in more than 20 states and passed in seven.
According to experts, adults are the biggest source of alcohol for underage drinkers. The Century Council, a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, found that 65% of underage drinkers get their alcohol from family and adult friends.
"This legislation aims to remind people in Ohio and across the country that it is unsafe, illegal and irresponsible for adults to furnish alcohol to minors," said Guy L. Smith, Executive Vice President, Diageo North America. "Adults need to be part of the solution to help combat underage drinking, not part of the problem."
