"Over the past 26 years, we have invested more than $1 billion in breast cancer research and community health programs, including more than $30 million directly into the Washington, D.C. area, which has the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the country," said Hala Moddelmog, a six-year breast cancer survivor and the CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "Thanks to funds raised by the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure, our life-saving impact on the Washington, D.C. area can be felt all year round."
Based on a community needs assessment, Komen has identified the three following funding priority areas:
-- To increase access to breast health information and services to women living in neighborhoods with high poverty rates.
-- To remove physical, cultural and linguistic barriers that women face throughout the entire continuum of breast health care.
-- To engage the faith community in ensuring the delivery of culturally competent breast health information and services.
Nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies and educational institutions in the Washington, D.C., Metro area, including Montgomery County, Md., Prince George's County, Md., Alexandria City, Va., Fairfax County, Va., Loudoun County, Va., Arlington County, Va. or Prince William County, Va., are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 11, 2008. Proposals must be submitted through Komen's online grant application provider, which can be accessed by visiting the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure Grants section of Komen's website at http://www.komen.org/grants.
Thanks to funds raised in the 2007 Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure, Komen awarded $3.3 million in grants to breast health and breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved in the Washington, D.C., area.
Earlier this year Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced the awarding of more than $100 million in research grants, representing the largest single-year investment in research in the organization's 26-year history, cementing its position as the world's largest source of private funds for breast cancer research. The 2008 grants slate moves Komen for the Cure closer to accomplishing its goal of investing $2 billion over the next 10 years to dramatically decrease breast cancer incidence and mortality.
