Pratt & Whitney Powers F-22 European Debut at Farnborough Air Show
PR Newswire, July 14, 2008
FARNBOROUGH, England, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW -- Two Pratt & Whitney F119 engines will power the F-22 Raptor's inaugural appearance at the Farnborough Air Show today. The F119 provides exclusive power for the U.S. Air Force's F-22 Raptor, the only operational fifth generation fighter jet in production today. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. company.
"Pratt & Whitney is proud to be part of this inaugural F-22 appearance at Farnborough," said Warren Boley, vice president, Pratt & Whitney Military Programs and Customer Support. "We hope the Air Show attendees enjoy watching the F-22 Raptor in action as U.S. Air Force Major Paul 'Max' Moga demonstrates the amazing versatility and unmatched capabilities of the Raptor and Pratt & Whitney's F119 engines."
The F119 features a unique thrust-vectoring nozzle allowing unprecedented maneuverability and precision. Two F119 engines enable the F-22 to supercruise, or achieve supersonic speeds, without the use of the afterburner. Pratt & Whitney's F119 propulsion system has logged 70,000 operational flight hours on the more than 340 production engines delivered to the U.S. Air Force since 2000.
Raptors are currently assigned to six U.S. bases: Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California, Nellis AFB, Nevada, Tyndall AFB, Florida, Langley AFB, Virginia, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, and Holloman AFB, N.M.
Pratt & Whitney military engines include the F100 family that powers the F-15 and F-16, the F119 for the F-22 Raptor, the F135 for the F-35 Lightning II, the F117 for the C-17 Globemaster III, the J52 for the EA-6B Prowler, the TF33 powering AWACS/Joint STARS/B-52/KC-135 aircraft, and TF30 for the F-111. In addition, Pratt & Whitney offers a global network of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and military aftermarket services (MAS) focused on maintaining engine readiness for our customers.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.
