Innovation at the Vancouver Olympic Games: Lighting for the site will feature new technology developed in Canada by Lumec

PR Newswire,  May 13, 2008

MONTREAL, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The landscape architects of the Vancouver Olympic Games have chosen Leonis, the latest luminaire by Lumec. The choice was not solely based on aesthetics, but also ecological responsibility since these luminaires use LED technology that consumes very little energy.

Lumec, the developer and manufacturer, could not hope for a better launch of their new product: the Leonis luminaires were chosen to light the site of the Vancouver Olympic Games, a window to the world, and not just any window, a window looking upon the very definition of the world's finest.

Why Leonis? Because the design as well as the energy saving performance of this Quebec made luminaire definitely ushers in a new era. By using LED technology (outdoor luminaires usually use HID lighting), Leonis is more durable and consumes 30% less energy while having the same photometric performance as its power hungry counterparts; it surpasses even the most stringent darksky norms (by casting light downwards only), and contributes to financial savings thanks to its low maintenance needs.

"The fact that Leonis was chosen for the Vancouver Olympic Games is a true milestone." Comments Francois L'Ecuyer, Lumec's R&D and Technical Support Manager. "With Leonis, we enter into a new age of ecologically responsible outdoor lighting. Up to this point, we were the only ones saying so. However, the landscape architects selected by the Olympic games organization confirmed it with their choice and those guys really know what they're talking about and where we're heading."

Lumec is Canada's foremost manufacturer of environment enhancing outdoor luminaires. Established in 1972, Lumec now employs over 240 people at their offices and workshops in Boisbriand and is sold throughout the world.
