So, has the time come?

New Mexico Business Journal, Feb, 2001

(July 1982)

"Last month the Association of Commerce and Industry sponsored, along with Senator Peter Domenici, our first economic development conference. The conference, called 'Forging New Mexico's Future,' drew some big gun speakers: Domenici, Robert O. Anderson of Roswell, Harvey Yates of Artesia and others. All echoed one theme: Let's get serious about economic development.

"Domenici, mildly critical of the business community for lack of foresight and planning, outlined four major areas where New Mexico needs to concentrate efforts to attract and keep job-producing industries: leadership, financing, transportation and education-all of which are lacking...

"If a state refuses to grow by design because you like the way it is," said Anderson, "all your young people leave to find jobs. This state saw too much of that and they never came back. The time has come when we have to face social needs, roll up our sleeves and grow the way destiny has provided. It's the greatest state with the greatest future."
