Jaynes: about the bottom line - The New Mexico Private 100
New Mexico Business Journal, Nov, 1991 by Jack Hartsfield
For every successful company, the bottom line is what it's all about.
What is often overlooked, however, is how the company got there, keeping things not just in the black on the ledger, but very much in the black.
Jaynes Corporation, among New Mexico's top Private 100 companies this year and among the nation's top 400 contractors selected by Engineering News Record, is a study deserving note.
J. Howard Mock, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Jaynes Corporation in Albuquerque, wasn't just around to see it happen.
He was among those who made it happen when he joined the firm, then called George T. Jaynes Inc., in 1971. Annual sales for the homebuilder at the time were $800,000.
Despite disappointing downturns in the New Mexico economy with the overall construction industry hit hardest of all, Jaynes turned $68.8 million in contracts last year.
"We've had a pretty good year," says Mock, with his background in civil engineering and homebuilding, who guided the company into general contracting.
Mock became company president in 1978. In 1989, he became chairman and CEO, with Donald A. M. Power named president.
Other officers are Ralph Eggleston, executive vice president; Ivan Nanneman, vice president/Farmington area operations; Ed Sims, vice president/project management; Rick Marquardt, vice president/estimating; Eugene Etheredge, vice president/concrete construction; and Dick Rice, secretary-treasurer.
