Socorro County: high tech and heritage - Socorro County, New Mexico - South-Central Region

New Mexico Business Journal, Dec, 1993 by Sharon Frink

Tech employs a total of 1,350 full-time and part-time and has an annual payroll of $22 million.

"We're the largest employer in the county and among the top 50 in the state," says Dr. Carl Popp, Tech's vice president for academic affairs.

Money Magazine ranks New Mexico Tech among the Top 100 best college buys, ranking 19th among 1,003 public and private four-year colleges and universities this year.

"Just being ranked on the national level gives us good recognition and attracts students here from inside and outside the state," says Popp.

Also contributing to the economy are such giants as Honeywell and Aerojet, which test ordnance in the area.

Sharon Frink is president of N.M. Factfinders of Peralta.
