Technology transfer: at the University of New Mexico
New Mexico Business Journal, Feb, 1997 by Chuck Wellborn
Companies also contact STC directly concerning potential commercial products in development at UNM. In responding to theses requests, STC often sets up meetings between the companies and UNM inventors so researchers know what industry's views are and the industry representative learns of the researcher's capabilities.
Companies often approach university researchers to research a given area of interest. In these cases the company is given an option to license any technology that may result from a project it sponsors.
In the last ten years UNM's total external support has grown from an annual total of $72 million to $197 million.
UNM sees the technology transfer process as a catalyst for dialogue between university and industry researchers. This process can produce grants for further research at the university. Increased funding provides job opportunities for UNM graduate students. They can work on industry-sponsored research and perhaps find full-time employment because o the experience they gain and contacts they form.
