First National Chief nurse appointed

Lamp, The, July, 2008

The Federal Government has moved to promote the crucial role of nurses in the health system by appointing Australia's first chief nurse. The inaugural National Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer is Rosemary Bryant, currently the Executive Director of the Royal College of Nursing, Australia.

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon said Ms Bryant would be a strong voice within government on all issues relating to Australia's 200,000-strong nursing workforce.

'Nurses are the backbone of our health system and deserve an official voice in the development of national nursing policy,' Ms Roxon said.

Welcoming Ms Bryant's appointment, NSWNA General Secretary Brett Holmes said nurses comprise over half the health workforce and their representation at a national level was long overdue.
