AMDO Community Celebrates Silver Anniversary

The Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officer (AMDO) community will celebrate its silver anniversary July 5.

AMDO's provide full-time aircraft maintenance and integrated logistics support throughout the life cycle for each naval aircraft and weapon system.

Based on studies conducted in the late 1950's and continuing through the early 1960's, the Chief of Naval Operations directed that a professional maintenance officer corps be established to oversee each aspect of aircraft maintenance, from the flight deck or overseas runways, to naval aviation depots and the systems command. The new aircraft introduced during this period (F-4B, A- 6A and E-2B) made establishment of this corps an imperative.

As a result of the vision and tireless efforts of CAPT Howard Goben and CDR Virgil Lemmon, the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) formally proposed the establishment of the AMDO designator (1520) in June 1967, with community sponsorship provided by the Commander Naval Air Systems Command, currently VADM William C. Bowes. This group has become the center of a professional aircraft maintenance management corps that has since grown to more than 600 officers.
