JASS goes on-line, receives praise from Sailors

US Navy Press Releases

The Bureau of Naval Personnel's prototype Job Advertising and Selection System (JASS), which began initial testing last month, will become available for all active-duty personnelman on Aug. 21.

The system will allow Sailors to work with career counselors using computers to review rating vacancies and apply for available jobs. Detailers will then process job applications according to the best match.

The 12-month test period will allow PNs to view all available billets, apply for those billets and allow detailers to process the applications. JASS will show every PN requisition by paygrade, billet, location, NEC required, and month an individual is needed to report.

Since mid-July, PNs in Norfolk and San Diego have been able to use the system in a trial mode, but have not been able to request orders through the new system. The initial response from Sailors and career counselors has been extremely positive. "Implement this system immediately!" said a PN2.

"It definitely shows that the Navy is striving to make it simpler for the service member," said another PN.

"Automation is it," said a PN1. "I think you have the right approach."

One command career counselor commented, "It provides better service to our Sailor -- it's a great system!"

JASS is accessible for command representatives who have an account on BUPERS ACCESS. The JASS Bulletin Board phone is DSN 288-8411 or (202) 433-8411. JASS user software (2MB) is available on the JASS server for download, and installation instructions are included.

Like BUPERS ACCESS, a modem and personal computer are required. Preferred hardware is a 14,400 or faster modem and a 386 or faster PC with 4MB RAM.

More information is available in from the JASS Help Desk at DSN 288-1248 or (202) 685-1248 and in a forthcoming NAVADMIN.
