. Aircraft Carrier Saratoga Headed for Inactive Fleet

MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- After nearly 40 years as "Jacksonville's Flagship," the aircraft carrier Saratoga was towed out of the Naval Station Mayport basin on May 22 heading for Philadelphia to become part of the Navy's inactive fleet. The ship completed its final deployment in June 1994. Sara's two 30-ton anchors are slated for possible use aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).

More than 180 items of historical value, including an ornate clock presented to the ship by former President Richard Nixon will be transferred to the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Saratoga County in New York and the USS Saratoga Association, which has display space aboard the Yorktown museum in Patriot's Point, S.C., are two potential recipients of some of the historical items.
