Remote Knowledge and Iridium Satellite Partner to Track Voyage of Hope
Market Wire, September, 2004
Remote Knowledge, Inc. (OTC BB: RKNW), a developer of remote communications and telematics solutions, and Iridium Satellite, a provider of worldwide mobile satellite communications services, today announced that the two companies are partnering to provide vital communications and tracking services for the Voyage of Hope.
The Voyage of Hope is a three-year round-the-world sailing expedition under the auspices of the National Stroke Association. The Hope is a 28-ft sloop, which is captained by Les Bissell, a stroke survivor. The goal of the trip is to raise stroke awareness and educate people around the world as to the warning signs of stroke and treatment options.
Remote Knowledge has donated and installed an rk3000 marine telematics device, which will provide automatic tracking and position reporting through the Iridium satellite network. The rk3000 is equipped with a handheld user interface terminal allowing Bissell to communicate with local authorities in the instance that he requires assistance. The rk3000 will also monitor his critical systems, including battery power, and will alert Bissell onboard if a problem occurs.
"The safety and peace of mind provided to Les Bissell by these combined technologies are truly extraordinary. National Stroke Association (NSA) is also excited about the possibility that these communications systems can help Les and NSA increase the awareness about stroke around the world," said James Baranski, CEO of the National Stroke Association.
Randy Bayne, President and CEO of Remote Knowledge said, "The rk3000 system will provide 24-hour tracking, monitoring and reporting of the sailboat's position and status, providing an important margin of safety for the boat and its crew during their courageous voyage."
Don Thoma, Iridium Satellite executive vice president for Data Services, observed, "The shore support staff will have round-the-clock access to the boat's location and status. In case of emergency, the satellite tracking system will be able to summon help immediately regardless of its location." Thoma noted that Iridium is the only truly global satellite communication system with coverage extending into the extreme polar regions, which will be important when the sailboat rounds the southern tip of Africa.
Bissell said, "We are very grateful to Remote Knowledge and Iridium Satellite for supporting this important cause. The satellite tracking system will provide a critical link for ship-to-shore communications throughout the voyage."
The sailboat's progress will be updated in near-real-time on the Voyage of Hope website (www.voyageofhope.org), as it makes its way across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic ocean and rounds Africa's stormy Cape of Good Hope.
