eMarketer CEO Geoff Ramsey Calls for Industry Standard in Benchmarking Online Advertising Revenues
Market Wire, September, 2004
eMarketer CEO Geoff Ramsey kicked off the 2004 Interactive Advertising World Conference and Expo conference portion of the program today calling for the industry to agree on a standard way to measure aggregate online ad revenues.
More than a dozen researchers currently estimate the size of the online ad market, Ramsey said, and their estimates differ from lowest to highest by as much as $3 billion.
"Let's get with reality here and have one number," Ramsey said. "This is supposed to be the most measurable medium out there."
eMarketer, which aggregates e-business and Internet statistics, benchmarks its quarterly ad spending projections on actual spending numbers from the Interactive Advertising Bureau/PricewaterhouseCoopers Internet Ad Revenue Report to create accountability.
Researchers do agree the industry will see significant growth this year, Ramsey said, citing three primary drivers:
1. High-speed Internet access is expected to reach 40 million households
by 2005.
2. A growing population of kids and teens -- 34 million are online.
3. As the industry matures, many media industry professionals with
significant interactive experience are moving into positions of influence.
The conference, co-produced by MediaPost and the Interactive Advertising Bureau, is one of the premiere events of the first-ever Advertising Week in New York City. The industry show includes more than 1,000 senior executives from leading advertisers, agencies and other media-related companies. It continues Tuesday.
