Eco-Friendly Handbags Given Away to Top Celebrities at the MTV Latin Video Music Awards
Market Wire, November, 2004
Ecoist handbags (www.Ecoist.com) were given to celebrities at the MTV Latin Video Music Awards on October 21, 2004. Lenny Kravitz, Shakira, Carmen Electra, Paulina Rubio, Julieta Venegas, and Natalia Lafourcade are just a few of the celebrities who received the gift.
Ecoist bags are hand-made from recycled materials that are used to make candy wrappers, food packages, and soft drink labels. Each bag is one-of-a-kind, with patterns and colors that vary widely, taking each artist 2-5 days to produce.
"Each handbag is a work of art. You really have to see them up close, inside, and all around and you'll be absolutely fascinated with the colors, details and the quality," says Gabriela Mekler, the company's co-founder who discovered these bags in her native Mexico and developed the partnership with the designer, Marisa Rey.
Environmental awareness is a major part of the company's message and culture, said Mekler. "We plant a tree for every bag we sell. We're really excited about providing unique products that have an environmental cause behind them."
And indeed, fashion movers and trendsetters are responding. Ecoist bags have also been picked up by Miami's well established boutiques including Chroma, Rebel, Aura, Koko & Palenki, as well as several art museum shops for their artistic appeal.
Ecoist, LLC is a Miami-based company specializing in handbags and home details made from recycled materials.
