EaglePicher 's Boron Business Awarded $6.2M Subcontract for Shielded Storage Units at DOE National Nuclear Security Administration's Y-12 National Security Complex
Market Wire, January, 2005
EaglePicher Commercial Power Solutions announced that its Boron business has been awarded a $6.2 million subcontract by BWXT Y-12, LLC, the operating contractor at the National Nuclear Security administration's Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The subcontract is for casting EaglePicher's BoroBond4 control and shielding product into units designed for the storage of enriched uranium at the Y-12 facility. Based on EaglePicher BondAids (a patented, chemically bonded phosphate ceramic technology), BoroBond4 technology took more than four years to develop.
"EaglePicher's innovative technology allows storage of these strategic materials in a more efficient manner than previously employed technologies," said Victor Grizzle, president of EaglePicher Commercial Power Solutions.
Without the unique BoroBond4 solution, BWXT Y-12 has estimated that storage space requirements would have been significantly higher.
BoroBond4 is derived from EaglePicher's BondAids product line for use in stabilization and encapsulation of radioactive waste and contaminated equipment, immobilization of hazardous waste, and shielding and criticality control in storage and transportation applications.
