Auspex File Servers Certified With Atempo's Time Navigator Backup/Restore Platform

Market Wire, 20050229

Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a provider of enterprise storage solutions, today announced that the operating system for its new NS3000 series of high-performance Network Attached Storage (NAS) servers has been certified for use with Time Navigator, a high-performance backup and restore software platform from Atempo (formerly Quadratec Software) that has a substantial presence in Europe and is now entering the U.S. market. The combined solution permits high-speed local or remote backup and restore of heterogeneous data using the open-standard Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP).

The certification ensures interoperability and optimal performance of Time Navigator with the TurboReplicator NDMP-based local and remote backup/restore software included in Auspex's new NetOS 4.1. It gives enterprises a robust backup solution that combines Auspex's exclusive parallel local backup and other high-speed backup strategies with unique features of Time Navigator such as the ability to rapidly restore any file or data component to the precise hour or day selected by the system administrator. NDMP backups can be performed from the Auspex NAS server to tape, another Auspex server, or backup server.

"This certification is another important step in our efforts to support all leading backup and restore software packages and offer the broadest possible range of options for protecting enterprise data," said Jeff D. Book, Auspex Director of Performance Engineering and Technology Partners. "Atempo has established itself as an important player in the European market under the Quadratec name, and the company's expansion into North America will give customers here a new alternative for NDMP-based backup."

Designed for enterprise data centers and outsourced data service providers, Atempo's award-winning Time Navigator is architected specifically to speed the process of restores. The software utilizes a unique time-based indexing system that makes it possible to track all data changes, at all levels, at virtually any time-slice of history. This allows system administrators to rapidly restore a single corrupted file or even a piece of data according to the time it was backed up, eliminating the need to wait for complete file system restores.

Time Navigator's backup technology simplifies and accelerates the restore process because of its ability to handle millions of files at either directory or volume level. The result is a dramatic reduction in user and business downtime. Time Navigator also supports simultaneous backup of NAS servers and standard production servers, true dynamic library and drive sharing, and real-time backup monitoring, offering a strong complementary solution for Auspex NAS servers.

Auspex NS3000 network servers complement Time Navigator's rapid restore capabilities with a variety of high-performance backup solutions. Auspex's patented, industry-exclusive parallel processing architecture allows multiple backup jobs to run on parallel processors simultaneously. Tape devices can be directly connected to an Auspex system for network-efficient LAN-free backup, and unique file-level and block-level data transfer engines stream data from disk to tape at high speeds across the LAN-free data path. These and other strategies greatly reduce backup times while allowing end users to continue working without negative impact on data availability.

Auspex's new OS supports both NDMP V2 and NDMP V3, permitting centralized backup management and enhanced backup performance by allowing NDMP-compliant applications such as Time Navigator to initiate and control backup and restore operations via messages sent over the network to the Auspex system. Auspex's new NS3000 network servers scale up to 68 TB of storage on a single system - by far the highest scalability in the industry - and offer native UNIX and Windows support for fast, secure cross-platform file sharing.

"We are working with key storage vendors like Auspex to help enterprises safeguard their information assets," said David Swafford, Atempo Vice President of Strategic Alliances. "With this certification of our Time Navigator software with the Auspex NS3000 and a broad selection of tape libraries and drives, system administrators have access to a high performance backup and restore platform that is integrated and optimized for smooth data protection."
