Teradactyl(R) Lands Contracts With The U.S. Department Of Energy

Teradactyl, LLC, a technology leader in network backup systems, today announced that the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has awarded two contracts for the licensing and maintenance of the True incremental Backup System(TM) (TiBS) products.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory located in Batavia, Illinois. Scientists at Fermilab carry out research in high-energy physics to learn more about the workings, origins and composition of the universe.
Teradactyl has licensed TiBS to be used exclusively by three groups within the Operating Systems Support (OSS) Department to protect and manage several terabytes of data for the laboratory. TiBS is an advanced software package that provides centralized backup of computer data for distributed computing environments. Fermi is using TiBS to backup computer data within these groups and store the information on tapes controlled by robotic libraries located at the facility.
Fermi chose TiBS because of the superior backup support that the product provides for the lab's Andrew File System (AFS) cell. Fermi now can backup its entire AFS cell, currently about 500 gigabytes of data, to a single, centralized backup server. The backup function historically has been a bottleneck for the very scalable AFS product. "By solving this backup problem TiBS has enabled Fermi to continue to grow their cell size to an estimated 5 terabytes," said Kristen J. Webb, President and CTO of Teradactyl. "This is another testament to the value of our TeraMerge(R) technology in the marketplace. The new fileservers have been placed online and TiBS provided seamless backup support during the volume migration."
Teradactyl also has contracts with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, one of the vanguard schools of computer technology. TIBS software is exclusively managing backup and disaster recovery for the university's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. TiBS also is backing up CMU's School of Computer Science.
The company began selling TiBS in November of 2000 and now services the commercial, educational and government sectors. "We are very proud to have Fermi as a client of Teradactyl," said John N. Riley, III, Partner & CEO. "They have a comprehensive understanding of backup systems and the problems in most backup software packages and software service programs. We feel that their decision to award these contracts to Teradactyl sends a clear message that we are producing the best and most reliable products available. Teradactyl is pleased to work with the Department of Energy and welcomes other federal installations to evaluate the True incremental Backup System."
