Two Gonzaga University mechanical engineering senior design teams have won national awards in the Student Safety Engineering Design Contest, marking the third consecutive year GU students have won awards in the national contest.

The team of Adam Baron, Bend, Ore., VaneDee Moua, Missoula, Mont., and David Quadracci, Brookfield, Wisc., were the winners of the Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division/American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health's 1999/2000 Student Safety Contest for its paper entitled "Design of a Truck Mounted Concrete Mixing Drum Cleaner." The winning team shares a cash award of $2,000 plus a travel allowance to attend the awards ceremony. Adjunct Professor Thomas Zysk, the team's adviser, will receive a Certificate of Merit and a $500 award. The award also marks the second straight year Zysk, an associate technical fellow at Boeing Spokane, had advised a winning team.

The team of Dean Eisenbacher, Phoenix, and Matt Kopp and Catherine Sander, both of Spokane, placed second in the competition for their design of the "Grizzly Clean-off Device for Use in Underground Mining Operations." Zysk also advised this team and will receive a $200 award for its second- place finish. This team receives a cash award of $500.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place during the Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division/ASME's Winter Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 5, at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel.
