USC Baseball Makes 20th Trip To College World Series Thanks To 15-Game Winning Streak; Trojans Go For 13th National Championship

WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE -- In the Trojans' regular season finale onMay 21 at Washington, USC rallied to win a game for the first time in 15tries this season when trailing after eight innings. Down 3-1 in the ninth, Bill Peavey hit a two-run double to center to tie the game whileSeth Davidson slapped an RBI bunt single to second to cap the three-runrally in USC's 4-3 win. The win pushed the Trojans' win streak to a season-high 10 games.

DEDEAUX FIELD -- This season marked the 26th year of play at Dedeaux Field,where USC has an all-time record of 570-255-1 (.691). When USC hosted SanDiego State on March 30, 1999, it was 25 years to the day from when thefirst game was played at Dedeaux Field. It was a special opening day in1974, as in the first game of a doubleheader, Russ McQueen threw a no-hitter against California.

COACHING SUPERLATIVES-- Legendary USC coach Rod Dedeaux was named CollegeCoach of the Century for baseball in the February issue of Coach & AthleticDirector Magazine. Dedeaux led the Trojan baseball team to an unprecedented 11 College World Series titles (including five in a row in the 1970s) and amassed a 1,332-571-11 record during his 45-year (1942-86)tenure at Troy.

1999 RECAP -- Despite a rough start, USC rebounded nicely to post a successful 1999 season. The Trojans went 36-26 overall, 17-7 for secondplace in the Pac-10, won their own NCAA Los Angeles Regional and advancedto the NCAA Super Regionals before losing at Stanford. LHP Barry Zito wasnamed the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year and was a unanimous All-American firstteamer. C Eric Munson and OF/LHP Jason Lane were also named to at least one All-American first team. Early-season injuries and close losses saw the Trojans get off to a 4-11 start, but they went 29-12 the rest of theregular season.
