Forrester Research Shares Vision of Online Retail at MarketLive E-Commerce Summit
Market Wire, March, 2005
The MarketLive E-Commerce Summit continued today with keynote addresses exploring growth in the online retail marketplace. With trends indicating a flattening of online sales growth overall, Carrie Johnson, Senior Analyst at Forrester Research, sees the importance of sales growth through the development of new markets and carefully chosen technology innovations -- areas to look to drive sales growth in what is becoming a fiercely competitive landscape.
The online shopping landscape is once again transforming, with demographic indicators showing an increase in women shoppers, a significant decrease in average household income as online shopping becomes more widely adopted, and a significant decrease in the growth rate of online shoppers. With a consumer audience staying relatively flat in numbers, the competition heats up for "wallet share." For individual retailers to increase their piece of the $137B retail pie, Carrie Johnson says, "Existing customers need reasons to increase their spend per online visit and new shoppers need to be attracted by more than low prices."
As an analyst in Forrester's Consumer Market Research team, Carrie follows the impact of emerging technology on consumer retailing and notes that retailers must selectively focus on innovations in technology, marketing, and merchandising to better target consumers with improved offers and engagement methods that are relevant at a segment and at a the personalized customer level.
MarketLive's E-Commerce Summit continues today with user training on the latest software and sessions for online retail executives to engage with peers to share insights and real world experience with online retail practices.
