Airespace and IEEE Announce the Release of "IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion," Second Edition

Market Wire, March, 2005

Airespace, Inc.®, the leader in intelligent wireless networking platforms, and IEEE today announced the release of the second edition of "IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion," co-authored by Bob O'Hara. This definitive handbook will give readers a thorough understanding of the ever-evolving IEEE 802.11 protocol for wireless networking.

O'Hara, Airespace co-founder and Chief WLAN Architect, is a founding father in the development of the original 802.11 protocol and was co-author of the first edition of "IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion." O'Hara is also a contributing author to the "Gigabit Ethernet Handbook," is a frequent contributor to Network World's "Wireless Wizards" column, and was recently nominated as one of the 50 most powerful people in networking by the same publication. O'Hara has more than twenty years of engineering experience in the development of networking, telecommunications, and computing products.

"Bob is a key figure in the advancement of Wireless LANs and a vital resource to Airespace and the entire Wi-Fi community," said Brett Galloway, CEO and president of Airespace. "We're proud to have an expert of this caliber at Airespace who continues to share his knowledge in published works of this magnitude."

"Bob is one of the few people who could write a handbook on 802.11 because he has followed the standards process from the beginning," said Vic Hays, former chairman of the IEEE 802.11 Standards Working Group for Wireless LANs. "I applaud Bob for taking on the task of writing this handbook. He's been instrumental in developing the IEEE 802.11 standard and is recognized throughout the wireless community for his contributions and technical leadership."

Since the first edition of "IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion" was published in 1999, the 802.11 wireless market has expanded from enterprise verticals, such as healthcare and retail, to more general users in corporations, schools, airports, hotels, coffee shops, and other environments. The increasing need for mobility in the enterprise has spawned the greatest growth in the use of wireless technology. As IEEE 802.11 equipment moves into its second stage, the new handbook will help system network architects, hardware engineers, and software engineers stay informed on the underlying technology that makes wireless mobility a reality.
