Patent Granted for Ground-Breaking Information Privacy Technology

Market Wire, October, 2005

Dategrity(TM) Corporation was granted US patent number 6,950,948 for its Intermix(TM) information privacy technology. Intermix is the result of ground-breaking research in cryptography and information security by Dr. C. Andrew Neff, Dategrity Chief Scientist and world-renowned mathematician.

Intermix randomly re-orders (shuffles) encrypted data elements in a way that completely obscures their original order, while providing a way to verify that the elements themselves have not been changed in the process. This makes it possible to separate identity information from other data elements while maintaining the ability to audit the overall integrity of the collection.

VoteHere®, a division of Dategrity Corporation, uses Intermix at the core of its Mail-in Ballot Tracker solution, which is now in use in multiple US jurisdictions. As applied to elections, Intermix enables a thorough audit trail to prove to voters that their ballot was counted while protecting privacy throughout. Intermix is also central to Sentinel, VoteHere's audit trail solution for electronic voting systems.

In 2006, Dategrity will use Intermix and other technologies to offer solutions for broader information integrity and privacy problems. The impact of identity theft and fraud is large and growing. In 2005 alone, more than 80 public and private organizations revealed that over 50 million individuals (half of US households) have been affected by breaches of personal information(1). Cost to merchants of fraudulent transactions amounted to $2.6b in 2004(2). Worse, 41% of consumers report spending less money online due to identity theft fears(3).

Identity and privacy protection legislation is being enacted across the US and worldwide. While legislation will set policy, compliance by organizations remains costly and difficult due to an inability by most organizations to provably protect information integrity. "Current solutions are insufficient because most work on the periphery of IT systems," said Steve Wood, Dategrity CEO. "Dategrity will solve these issues with Intermix and other technologies to make security intrinsic to data while enabling private and fluid information exchange and auditability."
