OfficeMax and Virginia Hospital Center Recognized for Innovative Communication Security Solutions

Market Wire, November, 2005

MailFrontier(TM), the leader in email security, today announced that two of its customers, OfficeMax® and Virginia Hospital Center, have been named to the InfoWorld 100. The InfoWorld 100 award honors IT projects that demonstrate the most creative use of cutting-edge technologies to further business goals, representing the 100 most innovative corporate IT solutions for 2005. OfficeMax and Virginia Hospital Center were selected based on projects that stretch beyond the typical, off-the-shelf solution, using multiple technologies in innovative ways to serve well-defined business goals. Both organizations submitted projects built around their successful implementation of the MailFrontier Gateway(TM) platform.

"The recognition by InfoWorld of OfficeMax and Virginia Hospital Center as leaders in implementing innovative IT solutions is a tremendous testament not only to these individual IT teams, but also to their commitment to making email good again for their organizations," said Anne Bonaparte, president and CEO of MailFrontier. "MailFrontier values its customers and continues to focus on meeting the unique email security needs of the mid-enterprise market through innovative, effective, and easy to manage technology solutions."

High profile brands like OfficeMax are often the target of directory harvest attacks by spammers and phishers. Despite having anti-spam protection from another company, OfficeMax's IT department was spending 60 hours per week battling unwanted email. They tested the MailFrontier Gateway Appliance and found it had effective email security protection, along with features that were generations beyond the other vendors they reviewed. OfficeMax estimates significant cost savings this year using the MailFrontier Gateway Appliance to stop unwanted email.

"As a retailer, we need a streamlined interface for our in-store employees, as well as integrated email security protection to handle both the volume and variety of email threats we face," said Sean Power, IT security lead for OfficeMax. "The flexibility, simplicity and effectiveness of MailFrontier Gateway has proven itself to our users."

Similar to all hospitals, Virginia Hospital Center faced unique challenges in securing its email system. Despite using the anti-spam solution available with their email server, the IT staff found that 90 percent of Virginia Hospital Center's junk email messages were still getting through to employees, and the hospital was receiving more than 200 spam and directory harvest attack messages every hour. With the installation of the MailFrontier Gateway Server, Virginia Hospital Center met or exceeded all of its initial requirements for email security protection including effectiveness, end-users control and easy administration.

"It is all about corporate liability and protecting our patients. We've developed intrusion barriers to protect vital systems and patient records, but email is a challenge for security," notes Mark Rein, Virginia Hospital Center's director of IT. "From installation to operation MailFrontier Gateway has been exceptional -- it has pleased even our most difficult users."
