Raymor Receives Order for Aerospace Application from Boeing for New Value-Added Spherical Metallic Powder-Nitinol
Market Wire, May, 2006
Raymor Industries Inc. (TSX VENTURE:RAR), a developer and producer of single-walled carbon nanotubes, nanomaterials and advanced materials, is pleased to announce that its wholly-owned subsidiary, AP&C Advanced Powders and Coatings has received an order from The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) for the purchase of spherical nitinol powder, a new value-added, specialized material now being offered by AP&C. Boeing is looking toward incorporating the special properties of nitinol into their next generation of composite aerospace applications.
Nitinol refers to a group of alloy comprising primarily of nickel and titanium in roughly 1:1 ratios. Nitinol exhibits, depending on elemental concentrations and processing, shape memory and/or super-elastic properties. A shape memory alloy is a metal that remembers its geometry. After bending or deforming, nitinol regains its original geometry by itself during heating (one-way effect) or simply during unloading (superelasticity), properties quite useful for composite enhancement in aerospace applications. Nitinol is biocompatible, and thus also has numerous applications in the biomedical field.
"Raymor has broken through with a third value-added product from our Metallic Powders Division," said Stephane Robert, President of Raymor Industries. "We see a large potential for spherical nitinol powders in the aerospace and biomedical fields, including the integration of these materials, along with our high quality single-walled carbon nanotubes into nanocomposites for new aircraft," adds Mr. Robert.
AP&C's metallic powders are produced using the patented Plasma Atomization Process. This globally unique process produces a highly pure metallic powder with an exceptional sphericity. These two properties allow AP&C's metallic powders to offer the best performance for aerospace, aeronautical, and biomedical applications. The patented Plasma Atomization Process, of which AP&C holds an exclusive, worldwide license, was developed at the beginning of the 90's at Hydro-Quebec's Shawinigan laboratory in collaboration with Noranda.
Boeing is the world's leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft, with capabilities in rotorcraft, electronic and defence systems, missiles, satellites, launch vehicles and advanced information and communication systems. Among their products, the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with as much as 50 percent of the primary structure -- including the fuselage and wing -- made of composite materials, continues to capture the interest of airline customers around the world. Since its April 2004 launch, the program has booked 393 orders and commitments from 29 customers; 350 of those are firm orders worth roughly $52 billion at current list prices, making the 787 the most successful new airplane in Boeing history.
For confidentiality and competitive reasons, terms of the order were not disclosed.
About Raymor Industries
RAYMOR INDUSTRIES INC. (TSX VENTURE:RAR) has as its mission to become a leading developer of high technology for the production of single-walled carbon nanotubes, nanomaterials and other advanced materials for high value-added applications. In November 2004, Raymor Industries created a wholly-owned, industrial subsidiary, AP&C Advanced Powders and Coatings, specializing in nanotechnology and advanced materials, and comprising four operational divisions: (1) nanotechnology products, including nano-powders, nano-coatings, and single-walled carbon nanotubes (C-SWNT) for "the applications of tomorrow"; (2) thermal spray coatings, which largely targets military, aeronautical, aerospace, specialized industrial, and mining applications; (3) spherical metallic powders, primarily used for biomedical and aerospace applications; and (4) net-shape forming, a component manufacturing technique used for ballistic protection and other aerospace and military applications. Raymor holds the exclusive rights to more than 20 patents throughout the world, with other patents pending.
