SurfControl Tracking New Email Phishing Scam Targeting 2006 FIFA World Cup Fans
Market Wire, June, 2006
SurfControl (LSE: SRF), the world leader in Internet content protection, is currently tracking an email phishing scam targeting 2006 FIFA World Cup enthusiasts. The email is in Japanese and claims to provide information on how to get Premium/Platinum tickets to the World Cup in Germany for a small fee. The scammer attempts to persuade recipients to send 1,000 yen (approx. $10USD) to one of three specified accounts. The email claims that once the money has been received text information on how to receive World Cup tickets will be sent back.
This latest email scam plays on a topical event and the urgency of the necessary response. This tactic is known as social engineering, and is a popular method used for financial gain through the exploitation of users' trust. Given the global popularity of an international event such as the World Cup, SurfControl anticipates that additional scams and attacks tied into the event may be looming. SurfControl tracked the first phishing and malcode blended threat tied to the World Cup in March of this year, and the company advises users to be on the alert for future attacks.
SurfControl's Threat Analysis and Research department is uniquely positioned to provide protection through its Adaptive Threat Intelligence service that spans the globe. Around-the-clock exchange of information on new threats allows SurfControl's Threat Experts to be at the forefront of Internet protection. SurfControl adds any new signatures and/or URLs to all three of the products in the SurfControl Enterprise Protection Suite.
