Broadwing Communications Deploys Acme Packet for Service Provider and Enterprise VoIP Services
Market Wire, June, 2006
GLOBALCOMM -- Acme PacketĀ®, the leader in session border control solutions, today announced that Broadwing Communications, LLC selected Acme Packet's Net-NetĀ® session border controllers (SBCs) to support services delivered by its voice-over-IP (VoIP) network. The Net-Net SBCs are maximizing service reach and security at the access and interconnect borders of Broadwing's network. Broadwing has been using the Net-Net SBCs to support its services since late 2005.
Acme Packet Net-Net SBCs are deployed in three Broadwing PoPs and support Broadwing's full VoIP product line, including both service provider and enterprise offerings. Broadwing PSTNConnect SIP enables VoIP providers to offer local and long-distance voice services to their end users in Broadwing's 24 local markets via a single IP connection. Broadwing's VoIP Integrated Access enables enterprises to integrate VoIP and IP services using their existing PBXs. Acme Packet's extensive experience in integrating with numerous VoIP softswitches and endpoints allowed for a seamless integration with Broadwing's network and Broadwing's customer networks.
Broadwing uses the following Net-Net SBC features to enable key aspects of its VoIP offerings:
-- Access control and Denial of Service (DoS) attack prevention, and
topology hiding of Broadwing's VoIP network protects critical service
resources from attack
-- Call admission control prevents traffic overload
-- Bandwidth policing to ensure that customers' calls match their service
profiles
-- Header manipulation enables peering with service providers using
different softswitches, maximizing service reach and revenue potential
-- VPN aggregation and bridging using 802.1q VLAN traffic mapping allows
routing to, from and between networks with overlapping private IP address
spaces while keeping the enterprise VPNs secure and segregated
"Broadwing delivers leading-edge quality and security in our next-generation communication offerings and Acme Packet plays a key role in making that possible," said Scott Kell, Vice President of Voice Operations at Broadwing. "Acme Packet's feature depth for both our enterprise and provider services, proven interoperability with our other infrastructure elements, and market leadership made Acme Packet a clear choice for us."
"Broadwing's impressive reputation for quality and network scalability is an important factor in their growing VoIP business," stated Andy Ory, president and CEO of Acme Packet. "Acme Packet's SBCs are integral elements of Broadwing's carrier class network and play a key role in enabling delivery of secure, reliable and high quality VoIP services."
