IAPP Unveils Certification for Canadian Privacy Professionals

The world's largest association serving privacy professionals, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), today announced it will offer its first international privacy credential, the Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C).

Designed by the IAPP in coordination with top Canadian privacy officers, the CIPP/C seeks to advance the privacy profession throughout Canada and to establish standards of knowledge in Canadian privacy. The IAPP developed the CIPP/C program with an advisory board of privacy leaders from corporate Canada, including:

--  Laura Davison, CIPP, Director of Privacy, Deloitte and Touche LLP;

--  Yim Chan, Chief Privacy Officer, IBM Canada Ltd.;

--  Drew MacArthur, Vice President Corporate Affairs, Legal, Government
    and Regulatory Affairs, Telus;

--  Robin Gould-Soil, Chief Privacy Officer, TD Bank Financial Group;

--  Peter Cullen, CIPP, Chief Privacy Strategist, Microsoft (formerly
    Chief Privacy Officer, Royal Bank of Canada); and

--  Jeff Green, Chief Privacy Officer, RBC Financial Group.

The CIPP/C program is made possible through an underwriting grant from Deloitte. The CIPP/C will be the chief credential for any professional responsible for implementing information privacy policies and practices within Canada, or policies subject to Canadian jurisdiction. It provides a foundation in the legal, operational and technical concepts of Canadian privacy and positions Canadian law in a broader international context for privacy regulations and practices. The program promotes understanding of Canadian federal, provincial and territorial privacy laws, effective privacy auditing and impact assessment strategies and best practices for information security and records management.

"We recognize the unique regulatory challenges Canadian privacy professionals face and are confident that the CIPP/C will both validate the skill set necessary to meet these challenges as well as elevate the role of the privacy professional across Canada."

The CIPP/C curriculum addresses federal privacy laws such as the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPA); provincial laws such as British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), Quebec's Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Privacy Sector, Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and Alberta's Health Information Act (HIA). The CIPP/C also covers model codes for privacy compliance, such as the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) and Canadian Organization for the Advancement of Companies in Health (COACH), as well as the roles and enforcement powers of the Canadian federal, territorial and provincial information privacy commissioners. Lastly, the program establishes understanding of the universal privacy concepts of Web privacy, information security and data sharing and transfer.

The IAPP's Canadian Privacy Certification Curriculum outline contains the specific requirements for the credential, which is included as an attachment.

Key events on the 2006 CIPP/C calendar include:

--  A live CIPP/C training Webcast in English, presented by IBM Canada
    Ltd., from 1-3 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on June 29. The French
    version of the Webcast will be held from 1-3 p.m. ET on July 6.

--  The first CIPP/C examination from 8-10 a.m. ET on October 20,
    administered by the IAPP as part of the IAPP Privacy Academy 2006 at
    the Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto, Ontario.

The CIPP/C expands the IAPP's privacy certification programs to three separate credentials. The IAPP launched its foundation course, the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), in October 2004. This was followed in March 2005 with the CIPP/G, an advanced course in U.S. government privacy. Today there are more than 650 IAPP-certified professionals working in the field.
