C & C Logistics Group Receives 2006 Star Award From Forgotten Harvest

Market Wire, June, 2006

C&C Logistics Group, headquartered in Canton, Mich., was recently honored with the 2006 Star Award by Forgotten Harvest, a non-profit agency that provides food to metro Detroit's neediest citizens.

The Star Award is presented annually to a company or individual who has provided exceptional support to the agency.

Forgotten Harvest rescues prepared and perishable foods from grocery stores, wholesale food distributors, caterers and other sources and distributes them throughout the metro Detroit area.

"Because of the nature of our work, we needed logistical advice and a tracking system that would enable us to automate and streamline our operations to accept and deliver food items in a timely and efficient manner," said Susan Goodell, executive director of Forgotten Harvest. "Bill Callaghan and Tom Cihonski, partners of C & C Logistics, came to our rescue."

C & C Logistics Group, a national consulting firm, provided logistical advice on managing Forgotten Harvest's fleet of trucks and drivers, insight and experience about the food industry, and recommendations for implementing efficiencies in donor acknowledgements. Through a partnership with Kettering University, C &C partner Tom Cihonski also supervised Kettering interns who developed software for a mobile tracking system to enable Forgotten Harvest to automatically track food donations and distributions.

"It has been great experience working with the Kettering interns in the development of a system that the agency has already put to use with three handheld devices for their drivers," said Cihonski. "My partner Bill and I were looking for an opportunity to give back to the community in a way that best utilized our skills."

Forgotten Harvest is the only food rescue organization in the country with such state-of-the-art technology. To finalize the mobile tracking system, Forgotten Harvest is seeking donations to support the purchase of 10 more handheld units.

"The expertise and contribution of time from C & C Consulting has greatly helped to make us more efficient, which ultimately allows us to further our mission and to feed more hungry people," said Goodell.

About Forgotten Harvest

Formed in 1990, Forgotten Harvest is metro Detroit's only food rescue organization. Currently, the agency rescues nearly 8 million pounds of food per year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from a variety of Health Department approved sources including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, and wholesale food distributors. This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered absolutely free of charge to emergency food providers in the metro Detroit area.
