Psion Teklogix Provides Hydro One with Customized Rugged Mobile Computing Solution for "Smart Meter" Pilot Program
Market Wire, September, 2006
Psion Teklogix, (LSE: PON) a global provider of solutions for mobile computing, wireless data collection and RFID, today announced that it is working to provide Hydro One Networks Inc. with a customized rugged mobile computing solution for its field service employees as part of its Smart Meter program. Hydro One Networks Inc., headquartered in Toronto, owns and operates one of the ten largest electricity transmission and distribution systems in North America.
Hydro One began installing approximately 15,000 smart meters recently in the Towns of Georgina and East Gwillimbury just north of Toronto to comply with the provincial government's initiative to have electricity distribution companies install smart meters in all Ontario homes and small businesses by 2010. Psion Teklogix' WORKABOUT PRO computers are being used by Hydro One installers to support the smart meter installations. Hydro One will use this pilot project of 15,000 smart meters to evaluate the Psion mobile solution for possible use to support the mass deployment of smart meters to its 1.2 million customers province-wide.
"Psion Teklogix is excited about being a part of Hydro One's smart meter pilot program; and based on the potential for province-wide expansion, this is a solid opportunity for Psion Teklogix to prove itself as a leader in providing mobile computing solutions to the Canadian utilities market," said Rob Douglas, Americas President, Psion Teklogix Corp. "We look forward to continue working with Hydro One on providing support for the Ontario government's new initiative to create a culture of energy conservation across the province."
Psion Teklogix' rugged WORKABOUT PRO handheld device was selected by Hydro One Networks Inc. for the Community Rollout Pilot project north of Toronto, to run the custom application used by Hydro One's field service employees.
"Having worked with mobile computing and field force automation tools for years, we understood the needs of a project of this nature and scale and knew the Psion Teklogix WORKABOUT PRO would be the right fit," said Gord Reynolds, Project Lead, Hydro One. "Hydro One field workers use a custom change meter order application, and the WORKABOUT PRO was a natural choice for a mobile device because of the ease at which the PC-based application could be integrated. Our hope is to see this solution run successfully in the community rollout trial and grow to become a large-scale field force application that can be replicated in similar installations across the province."
The Psion Teklogix WORKABOUT PRO delivers the performance, ruggedness and durability required for mobile data collection all in an ergonomic package. The rugged device also utilizes Windows CE .NET, allowing it to be tailored to the specific needs of any particular mobile workforce.
