Adaptec Launches New Snap Servers That Provide Centralized Data Management and Protection at Affordable Price Points
Market Wire, October, 2006
Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, today introduced three new network storage systems, the Snap Server 110, 210 and 410, that provide cost-effective capacity from 160GB to 2 TB in compact desktop or rackmount formats and leverage the powerful GuardianOS operating system -- the same software platform that runs on the midrange Snap Server product line. Extremely easy to set up and maintain, these systems are designed for use in situations with minimal or no IT resources, making them ideal solutions for small/medium businesses (SMBs) and remote or branch offices. The Snap Server 110, 210 and 410 are also the first offerings priced between $500 and $3,000 to offer unified block (via. iSCSI) and file support, as well as optional enterprise-class applications for data replication, disk-to-disk backup and disaster recovery.

The Snap Server 110, 210 and 410 also deliver exceptional performance as measured by VeriTest, the testing service of Lionbridge, which reported that these solutions outperformed competitive offerings by up to 62 percent(1). Combined with the midrange Snap Server product line or used on a standalone basis, the Snap Server 110, 210 and 410 allow companies to quickly deploy a centrally managed network storage solution that distributes enterprise-class data management and protection services throughout an organization.
Illinois-based musicdirect, a provider of audiophile LPs and CDs as well as a complete range of high-end audio accessories, is using the Snap Server 410 as the main storage application for all graphic project files created by its designers.
"We have an important business to run and don't have time to become experts at deploying network storage. That's why we've standardized on Snap Servers. They're ideal for replicating data between locations and accessing shared files across our network," said Steve Shapiro, internet technology developer at musicdirect. "With the Snap Server 410, we can store our work files and use the Snapshot feature to set-up hold 'versions' of the files in case someone accidentally deletes something important or we need to implement a full recovery. These are important features to our business that aren't typically available at this price point. The new Snap Servers eliminate the need for a much more expensive file server -- we get the gigabit transfer speeds we need, great monitoring options if there is a problem, and this system is much more stable and reliable than our previous solution."
Verizon Business, the small business arm of Verizon Communications, is looking at using the new Snap Servers in their branch offices, centrally managed from their Network Operations Center in Texas.
"The new Snap Servers provide us the speed and ease of installation necessary for many of our emergency backup needs," said Andrew Perry, senior network design engineer at Verizon Business. "With remote configuration capabilities, it provides an off-the-shelf solution that does not need on-site support which is critical in remote backup strategies."
Additional Features and Benefits of the Snap Server 110, 210 and 410
The Snap Server 110 and 210 are compact desktop storage systems that offer single and dual drives respectively and a single gigabit network interface. The Snap Server 210 also provides RAID 0 and 1 data protection. The Snap Server 410 is a rackmount model with four disk drives and two gigabit network interfaces. In addition to RAID 1 and 0, the Snap Server 410 also supports RAID 5.
-- Flexible, Multi-Purpose Storage Platform - These systems are the first
network storage solutions in this price class to enable unified file and
block (via iSCSI) services as well as offering multi-protocol support for
NFS, AFP, and CIFS. Companies are able to reduce overall IT spending by
storing both files and structured data in the same system.
-- Ease Of Use - GuardianOS offers an intuitive graphical user interface
(GUI) that makes the Snap Server 110, 210 and 410 easy to install,
configure and maintain. Remote or branch offices without trained IT staff
are able to effectively deploy and manage these servers, ensuring that data
is protected regardless of where it resides in the company.
-- CustomizeAdvanced Data Protection and Data Management - Based on IT
budgets and storage requirements, companies can select the optional
integrated software solutions they need to help move, manage, and protect
corporate data. Available software includes block-level data access (via
iSCSI), CA eTrust antivirus and BakBone's NetVault backup software for
deployment of disk-to-disk or disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D & D2D2T) archiving.
Other applications available include StorAssure, a Continuous Data
Protection solution for automatically backing up valuable information on
distributed desktops and Snap Enterprise Data Replicator (Snap EDR), a high-
performance, network-optimized data replication and management software for
advanced data protection and disaster recovery capabilities.
